Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a non-invasive soft tissue system that treats conditions of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. This soft tissue management system was developed by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A sample of the conditions that are rapidly and permanently resolved with ART® includes neck pain, headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, medial epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis, cubital tunnel syndrome, shoulder impingement syndromes, knee problems, plantar fascitis and sciatica. Dr. Leahy developed this technique to successfully and effectively treat soft tissue injuries which were not responding to other traditional forms of treatment. Through manually observing the patterns and behaviors of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves under specific conditions and treatments, Dr. Leahy was able to develop a system that would consistently resolve over 90% of his patients’ problems. Dr. Leahy now certifies other health care providers in the use and applications of Active Release Techniques.

The goal of ART® is to manually release sites of neural entrapment and/or adhesions (fibrosis) thus restoring soft tissue texture, motion, and function. Adhesions can occur as a result of acute injury, repetitive motion, and/or constant pressure or tension. This build up of adhesions or fibrosis can cause symptoms of reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. ART® eliminates the pain and dysfunction associated with these adhesions.

ART® treatment is a combination of protocols. The certified ART® provider manually evaluates the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. The provider uses precisely directed tension in conjunction with specific patient movements to release the adhesions. The treatment protocols utilized are patented and state-of-the-art. They allow providers to individualize each patient’s care to meet the specific needs of the patient.
